Say you are considering changing automobile insurance company.
Automobile insurance will certainly bring a lot of results.
To narrow your search for more specific information you might try searching
• Bad driver insurance rates
• Automobile insurance rates
• Compare automobile insurance rates
• Florida automobile insurance rates
These are Long Tail keywords: the search terms most likely to return the information you seek.
As a marketer, you want to identify those terms and use them in your articles or posts.
Long Tail keywords lead to high conversion rates: the customer is searching for your information.
Assuming you have more than one page on your website with links between the pages, targeting Long Tail keywords leads to more traffic from search engines.
In my book Social Network Marketing I recommend using HitTail, a subscription service which you can use for 60 days free.
HitTail reveals in real-time the least used, most promising Long Tail keywords bringing search engine visitors to your site. Getting started is easy. Sign up for an account and copy and paste some code onto pages within your site.
HitTail will make writing recommendations for future content that will improve your search engine results.
HitTail works on static websites and blogs. However, HitTail doesn’t work for new websites or blogs. It needs a certain amount of pages and traffic to produce reliable analysis and recommendations.
You can and should, of course, have your own internal analytics on your web pages. That way you can monitor visitors behavior: how they arrived on your site and what links within your site they are most likely to use after they get there.
Use that information to build additional keyword rich pages.
Hint: don’t use the same combination of Long Tail and broad keywords on new content. Stick with the Long Tail keywords that are attracting visitors but use a different slant to each article so that your other related keywords are different from the original page. If you don’t, search engines will see your new content as duplicate content and penalize you with lower ranking on their SERP.
